Japan has 14,125 islands
In a startling revelation, the Japanese archipelago is now notable for having twice as many islands as previously thought, reaching a total of 14,125. Contrary to the belief that this was due to the discovery of new islands, the key lies in technological advances in the survey, which have allowed for a more accurate count.
Until recently, there were 6,852 islands in the Japanese archipelago, according
to a 1987 report by the Japan Coast Guard. However, a recent review by Japan's
Geospatial Information Authority, the first in 36 years, revealed that the
actual number is double what was expected: 14,125 islands.
The count was based on data from Basic Digital Maps of Japan, which serve as the
basis for detailed topographic maps at a scale of 1:25,000. Specific checks
were carried out on natural islands with a coastline of 100 metres or more,
excluding those created by land reclamation or other means. This significant
increase in the count is primarily attributed to advances in survey technology,
including aerial photography, which provides a sharper view of coastlines and
allows previously uncounted islands to be identified.
