Meet the Last Inca Bridge: Q'eswachaka

In the heart of the Peruvian Andes, about 100 kilometers south of Cusco, lies the Q'eswachaka Bridge, the last rope suspension bridge built with ancestral Inca techniques. This bridge, which crosses the Apurimac River, is a living symbol of Inca engineering and culture, with more than 500 years of history.

History & Meaning

Q'eswachaka is part of the Qhapaq Ñan, the vast network of Inca trails. Its name means "rope bridge" in Quechua. Every year in June, the local communities of Huinchiri, Chaupibanda, Choccayhua and Ccollana Quehue come together to rebuild it using braided straw, keeping alive an age-old tradition.

Construction Process

The reconstruction of the bridge is a community event that begins with a ceremony to the Pachamama and the apus. The men braid the Q'oya straw into thick ropes, while the women prepare food. Ropes are placed over the river and woven together to create a sturdy structure.

Tourist and Heritage Importance

Q'eswachaka is a tourist attraction that offers a rich cultural experience. In 2013, UNESCO included it on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This recognition helps preserve the tradition and allows visitors to connect with Inca history and spirit.

The Q'eswachaka Bridge is a marvel of ancient engineering and a living symbol of Inca culture and community, a legacy that lives on in the heart of the Andes.

If you want to live such an experience, it can be possible together with MICKEY TOUR SAC, your trusted travel agency.
