The story of a Canyon
The Colca Canyon was inhabited by Andean cultures many years ago. Thus, the first human traces appeared in the era of camelid hunters and gatherers and time later the Wari culture became the first great civilization that built platforms and enclosures in the place.
Although the Colca Canyon does not keep secrets or mysteries like Machu Picchu, Lake Titicaca or the Nazca Lines, it is important to mention that its formation is due to the erosion of a volcanic rock caused by the Colca River. In addition, it is located near the Valley of the Volcanoes, which is why it is a geologically active area and is made up of another 40 volcanoes.
The deep wonders of the Colca
If we talk about Arequipa, the first thing that may come to mind is the famous Misti Volcano or the Ruta del Sillar. However, the 'White City' has other attractions just as exciting and interesting. For example, the Colca Canyon. This is located northwest of the southern region, exactly in the province of Caylloma. The imposing Colca Canyon has 4160 meters and is considered the fourth deepest in the world.
Located in the Colca Valley, the Canyon is one of the main attractions in Arequipa and in our country, since it is the perfect place for tourists to do adventure sports, learn more about the ancient culture and connect with nature. In addition – as if that were not enough – it is the perfect place to appreciate the majesty of the flight of the condor, the largest flying bird in the world whose wings can measure three meters in wingspan.
It should be noted that the Colca Canyon was included in the list of 100 sustainable destinations in the world by the Global Destination institution, recognizing the cultural identity and natural diversity found in our territory.
